New solar panel product to reduce costs up to 10%

A new solar panel product that will reduce costs by as much as 10% is expected to go into production by the end of the year under an agreement reached with the world’s largest renewable energy company.

SunEdison Inc., which operates its solar headquarters in Belmont, Calif., plans to begin production of a component that will increase the efficiency of solar panels by the end of the year. The solar panel module is expected to reduce total residential costs by about 10%, commercial costs by about 8% and utility scale costs by about 6%.

The component, created by Fremont, Calif.,-based company, Solaria Corp., will reduce costs because it makes solar panels more efficient. The module increases output of solar panels by 15%, the company said.

Water desalination is here. But is it sustainable?

In a very dry state, turning to the sea as a source of water for drinking, bathing and irrigation has its attractions. Desalination is drought-proof — the ocean is one pond we can’t empty so quickly. It’s more expensive, but the cost is relatively stable, and as technology makes the process more efficient, those costs have been trending downward.

But Californians should be leery about desalination as anything more than a backup plan that might be appropriate for a few spots up and down the coast. And that’s not just because the process involves sucking up some fish larvae, and spitting out brine (which is quickly diluted) or even because it’s an electricity hog. (The California State Water Project is the single biggest user of electricity in the state because of the energy needed to move water from one place to another — especially over the Tehachapi Mountains to Southern California, but desalination, gallon for gallon, uses far more power.)

Other improvements to desal are expected to bury pipes so they don’t affect sea life, reduce electrical use and use solar and wind energy to power what’s needed. Poseidon Water already plans to place solar panels at its Huntington Beach facility, if it gets the OK to build it, but that covers only a fraction of the plant’s electrical needs. It also is looking for ways to purchase solar power directly — perhaps by buying its own solar array in the desert.

UK solar power industry proposes emergency plan to save renewables

The solar power industry has proposed an emergency plan to rescue renewables, which it says would add just £1 to consumer bills by 2019, on top of the £9 a year that clean technology subsidies cost bill payers.

The scheme is a response to government plans to cut subsidies for rooftop solar panel installations by 87% from 1 January. The Solar Trade Association (STA) has warned the move could cost up to 27,000 jobs and waste public money already spent on supporting the technology.

Solar companies are already going bust as a result of the changes, with an estimated 1,000 jobs lost so far. On Friday, a company backed by the billionaire inventor Elon Musk pulled out of the UK, blaming the government for not supporting the technology.

A cloud over solar energy
